“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”

So the other night I had the privilege of attending a screening for “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”..What a fantastic movie..For people who daydream like me..though my daydreams are mostly about me winning the Lotto and what I would do with it 😀 This movie really is just a wonderful journey in the life of someone who stops daydreaming and goes for it. And the reason why will make you smile & laugh. The on-location scenic filming is so beautiful at times you will wonder that if you do win the lotto..you might just go there!! ha! The acting is good, there is no super standout performance, but everyone meshes so well and really good casting of the roles here.. Just remember I told you, Cinnabon is like heroin.. With all the movies coming out in the holiday season, I highly recommend this be put on your list for pure entertainment value! Grade: B+ #peggyatthemovies

“Best Man Holiday”

So tonight I thought I was going to see a rip-roaring, gut-busting comedy ‘Best Man Holiday’ – and while that might not have happened, something that I figured out about 30min into the movie as did my movie partner of the evening, the fantastic Miss Kimberly Eaton, we both really liked it. Now for me, there was to much on religion/god/him things..at odd points in it..but there were also a few funny moments that were timed well and help break up the harder parts. It’s well acted, but don’t let the trailer confuse you as it did me, it’s not a comedy..REPEAT..it is NOT a comedy and you will not leave laughing. maybe could be called a dramady..but definitely, and without giving any spoilers away, way more on the drama part and most should bring tissue when seeing it. Grade: wavering because of the decent acting from everyone..between a B- & C+ #peggyatthemovies

“About Time”

I am not someone who likes sappy movies.. I find them tedious & pretty formulatic.. but tonight I went to a screener of ‘About Time’ And bravo!! It’s actually really sweet, cute & is very well acted by all in the movie.. It’s from the same director as ‘Notting Hill’ and I loved that movie..with Elvis Costello singing the end theme song ‘Her’ moving on..and more so, it wasn’t so sappy, and they made the premise of the movie very believable..for me at least. I enjoyed even more so watching Jason Watters get all teared up!! 😀 But seriously, for all those people who are looking for something different, with a sweet & bit of a comical side to it…This is your weekend movie!! Grade: B #peggyatthemovies

“Dallas Buyers Club”

So I remember once reading the opening of a book called Brian’s Song, and it said ‘All true stories end in death’ – morbid, but kinda true. “Dallas Buyers Club” is a true story.. and it’s one of the better movies I’ve seen all year. It’s tells the story of Ron Woodward, and for those of you who don’t know who that is, he was probably one of the 1st straight men to be infected with HIV back in the day, 1985ish, when no one really knew anything about the disease. It’s an incredible story that tells one man’s odyssey of fighting for his life & others against the almighty FDA who just don’t really care if people live or die with their ridiculous procedures. Matthew McConaughy is almost unrecognizable and gives possibly the performance of his lifetime & for me he is 2 for 2 this year with ‘Mud’ also being really good. I do see a possible Oscar Nom for him on this.. Jared Leto – NEEDS to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor (or Actress  he is superb. All in all, great performances, great story for all to see. Don’t miss this movie!!! Grade: A #peggyatthemovies

“GRAVITY”

Saw ‘Gravity’ tonight – and an fyi Los Angelenos..Regal Cinemas has $7 Tuesdays..all day/night any showing, 3D-IMAX whatever..no extra charge..it’s downtown at LA LIVE which is unbearably quiet when nothing at Staples or Nokia..but anyways..yeah it was probably 1 of the 1st movies I would say ‘worth it in 3D’ as it was well done and the photography was amazing.. I think I am missing the hype of what a GREAT movie it is though..I mean I thought it was good.. but not great by any means.. to be truthful, there was a moment I almost nodded off. Sandy was fun in it, but this is not an award winning performance like ‘The Blind Side’ was..and although George Clooney’s character threw me off and to be honest, kinda creeped me out. Would I recommend it. eeehhh that’s a tough call but yes, I guess I could say I would though not as highly as some do.

Grade: C+ #peggyatthemovies

“Last Vegas”

Saw a screener last night of ‘Last Vegas’ and yeah it’s exactly what you think it’s going to be.. a movie that your parents will probably love…well at least my mom will. It’s predictable & schmaltzy, but with the star power it has it does deliver a few good laughs as you would expect it to do. Would I recommend for anyone but the parents, nah, but it’s always nice to see your parents laugh some. Grade: C-

“Baggage Claim”

So..free screening of ‘Baggage Claim’ tonight.. umm.. yeah..what do I say, what do I say, what do I say, about this movie.. Well.. Paula Patton is stunningly pretty..but that’s all I can give her..she so over-the-top acts in this movie she’s almost unbearable as a character..and if you don’t figure out the plot line within the first 3 minutes of this movie..well..then you should stop going to movies altogether! ha! It’s got a few redeemable moments from the supporting cast, most note-able are Adam Brody & Jill Scott.. but all in all I think there are much better movies to spend your money on this holiday movie season.. Grade: D #peggyatthemovies

“Rush”

I am sooooo looking forward to the Holiday movie season – so to start it off and even though I have a free screening on Thursday of “RUSH” – I had to go see it on the 1st day of limited release…Why?..because I’ve loved Formula 1 since I was a little girl & my dad & I used to watch it together & he would tell me all about the race car drivers. This movie is every single one of those memories and having had the chance to have met Niki Lauda in the 80’s makes it super special to me.. But it’s not just a movie about car racing, it’s a story about people & their lives, about what it takes to overcome & survive incredible odds, about 2 sportsmen, who led polar opposite lives & who despite an intense rivalry that made them hate each other, were also full of respect for each other. It’s sad, funny, intense & and even though it has a few choppy moments, is a great story woven into it about a world I’m sure many don’t know to much about. For me, I can’t wait to see it again..oh and yeah.. This is for the girls ~ Chris Hemsworth is amazingly hott! I didn’t think I would ever say this..but his blue eyes are almost like Paul Newman blue eyes.. 😀 Grade: B+ #peggyatthemovies

“The Butler”

Last night I had the opportunity to see a movie..a movie that I think might just sweep the Oscars, at least as of now. It was like no other movie I’ve seen in a while & so compelling & such great storytelling & acting, that I was truly moved in every way possible. It is by far the best movie of the year yet. I am talking about ‘Lee Daniel’s – “The Butler”. This story moved me in every way possible – you laughed, you cried, you hid your eyes in horror and you remembered & learned that yes, there were heroes in all of it. You remembered & saw history..most of it sad in the 60’s – which to me was by far the most turbulent decade we’ve had, and the joys of a love story, a story between a father & son & most of all a story of a man who knew many Presidents & knew them on a completely different scale than anyone could. As for the acting, I stopped being a fan of Oprah Winfrey a long long time ago..she was amazing in The Color Purple, but the whole talk show business irked me..I can only say this..Dammit Oprah, why didn’t you keep acting all those years instead of the damn talk show..She was in one word – Fantastic – and I hope she finds more roles like this.. Forrest Whitaker..I don’t think he is capable of a bad performance..and this proves it once again. Lenny Kravitz, Cuba Gooding Jr, John Cusak, Robin Williams all wonderful supporting.. Jane Fonda as Nancy Regan – oh the irony and flawlessness that this was! This movie still has my thoughts reeling this morning & I will see this movie again, because it is simply..The Best Movie of the Year!! Grade: A+ #peggyatthemovies

“Blue Jasmine”

‘Blue Jasmine’ is a full on Woody Allen movie..It’s like you can always tell a Woody Allen movie even if no one told you he wrote & directed it.. He just has a certain style..and I’ve always liked it. Was it his best..nah..I think it’s been awhile since there has been a fantastic Allen movie..but it was really good. It had it’s moments of laughter, sadness, quirky & kind of a message dare I say… Cate Blanchett is stellar as always, but who REALLY shocked me was Andrew Dice Clay of all people in a supporting role.. and did a really good job!!! Grade: B – #peggyatthemovies
