REVIEW: “THE FLASH” (2023) WARNER BROS.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have faced a long and challenging road in bringing THE FLASH” to the big screen. With various director dropouts, multiple production delays, and some shocking headlines about the film’s lead, the film hasn’t had what you would call an easy journey. And yet, here we are. Rather here I am talking about a film that did something not many films have been able to do – it made me cry at the end.

Directed by Andy Muschietti“THE FLASH” follows Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), as he travels back in time to change the events of the past and this time, they are twice the trouble. However, when that attempt, made with nothing but the best intentions, to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod (Michael Shannon), has returned, threatening world annihilation. With no other superheroes in this new timeline to turn to, Flash/Allen looks to coax a very different than the one he is used to (Ben Affleck) Bruce Wayne/Batman (Michael Keaton), out of retirement. The new/old Batman has stark reservations over Barry’s idea, despite sharing childhood tragedies. This is all to rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian — albeit not the one he’s looking for.

The Flash manages to balance a lot of elements, including a large cast of characters, with nods to the comic-book storyline, and a bunch of complex multiverse elements. Giving us enough background here and there to remember where we last left off and despite all of the goings on in the background, Muschietti manages to deliver a decent cohesive story that never feels overwhelming or disjointed. Despite the movie’s high-octane action sequences and fast-paced storyline, the emotional aspects are never overlooked. Humour, drama, and heart, are neatly balanced making the audience invested in Barry’s journey and maybe even rooting for him along the way.

Moving on to the cast, Ezra Miller’s performance as Barry Allen/The Flash is quite good. There are moments when you feel “Damn he is so good here right now” but it’s also hard at those exact moments to not experience all his personal real-life problems enter your thoughts as well. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know. Doing my best to separate the two while watching as Miller breathes new life into this iconic character, giving him with a sense of relatability and vulnerability that makes the character, not the actor, more likeable than one would think. Playing not one but two versions of Barry Allen with distinct personalities and character arcs, Miller delivered completely different performances for each of them. The ability to differentiate and bring unique traits to each side of the characters so that they never felt like the same person, and each added something key to the film. Being tasked with playing an alternate, younger Barry for much of the movie isn’t an easy thing to do, and Miller truly does well at this playing well into his endearing awkwardness and bumbling charm. Despite Miller’s disturbing string of personal scandals, you will find he’s possibly one of the best things about the film – that is – if you can separate the art from the artist.

As for the supporting cast, Michael Keaton’s return as The Batman is undoubtedly a highlight. The actor delivers a darker look at the Batman we all remember as an older Bruce Wayne/Batman, and he’s clearly having a lot of fun with his return as the caped crusader. I think almost anyone who sees this film can agree, when he utters the words “I’m Batman;” there is a chill sent down your spine to be had. Sasha Calle is more than impressive as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, although we don’t spend as much time with the character as one would’ve liked, she is hypnotizing in her portrayal. As well as being a total badass, Calle brings a level of vulnerableness and sensitivity to the character that makes her instantly captivating, and she shares some touching moments with Miller’s Barry Allen character. Oddly, the least compelling character here is Michael Shannon as Zod. As much I as I j’adore Shannon and pretty much everything he has ever done in his career, this felt like a phoned in performance. Almost like he clearly didn’t want to be there and his character arc as the villain was the least impressive thing about this film. Your villain can make or break a movie and he made barely did it adequately here so maybe it’s lucky he isn’t featured as a main character.

So, while Shannon’s performance as the villain doesn’t knock you out, The Flash does do a good job of showcasing Barry’s powers, with action sequences highlighting the powers in creative ways, from dodging bullets and phasing through walls to simply punching bad guys and saving lives. All the while ‘teaching’ the other Barry how to use these same powers offers the films moments of comedy as well. While the action scenes are slightly let down by some messy cheap looking CGI, by 2023 standards at least some of the computer graphics in here look a bit phony and almost cartoon-like at times. Even with all that, there are more than a few sequences in here that might just leave you on the edge of your seat.

With some great action sequences and relentless narrative, The Flash can be a fast-paced, exhilarating ride. However, the film could’ve benefited from slowing down in certain moments to allow the audience to fully appreciate the character development and emotional beats. Certain scenes or plot points fly by too quickly, leaving little time to at moments to connect with the characters or fully grasp the weight of the situation. Had the film taken a bit more time to slow down and explore these moments in greater detail, it could have elevated the depth of the story and made for a more well-rounded and probably for many, a more satisfying watch.

Going back to the CGI briefly as although the film is one of the biggest and most expensive of the year, a lot of the CGI falls short in a very noticeable way. While certain scenes are nicely done with the CGI working alongside the camera to create the visuals, others look like video game cutouts or effects from the early 2000s. It’s a shame that it does fall as short as it detracts from the overall watch and prevents the audience from fully immersing themselves in the story.

It would also be remiss to not mention all the cameos – of which there are so many some just aren’t meant to be spoiled – though that seems to be de rigueur amongst the haters on social media. Even if you hate it, don’t spoil films for others – it’s not a good look. Ever. And while some made me gasp, and some made me smile – however you feel about it all is up to each individual. For me, the reveal at the end of Barry with his mother Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú) was the one that broke me. If you’ve lost your mother – than this too will probably resonate and hit you as well.

Despite a few pacing issues and some of the not so good CGI for a movie of this size, The Flash delivers a decent watch experience that with more heart than expected and balances the humour and action. BUT… it also falls into many time travel, multiverse formulas that can drag the rather predictable story at times. Overall, it’s a mixed bag that was enjoyable enough – if you can separate the art of film from the lead actor of the film.

Stay for the end credits.. and by end..I mean all the way through all of it.

REVIEW: “THE TENDER BAR” (2021) Amazon Studios

Based on J.R. Moehringer’s coming-of-age book, this is a somewhat sweet drama that tells the story of a fatherless boy Young Jr. (Daniel Ranieri), growing up with his loving, determined mother (Lily Rabe), his wise, advice-dispensing Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), and his eccentric Grandpa (Christopher Lloyd). As he gets older, he begins to pursue the Ivy League education his mother wanted for him, while also keeping a matter-of-fact outlook on life thanks to the time he spends in his uncle’s bar and the patrons within it.

Director George Clooney and screenwriter William Monahan don’t quite hit a home run with this familiar but likeable enough story, but it definitely has it’s moments of sweetness, drama and charm. Tye Sheridan steps in a the young adult version of Jr., but is quite bland and Ranieri definitely steals the role from him. Affleck comes through here playing a gruff, endearing character reminiscent of some of his best ’90s roles. Ranieri, Rabe and Lloyd are also strong, but the most memorable work is courtesy of newcomer Briana Middleton. She plays J.R.’s first love, an ambitious student who’s far more complex than the typical cinematic dream girl and makes their relationship over the course of the movie much more interesting than it otherwise might have come around as.

Still, the low-key approach taken here, accompanied by a wonderful period-appropriate soundtrack makes The Tender Bar a decent, heartfelt watch.

REVIEW: “SUBURBICON” (2017) Paramount Pictures

Oh Georgie and Matty – what have you done here!!! I mean I’m all for unique and different when it comes to filmmaking, but when a ‘unique’ film does absolutely nothing to intrigue its audience, aside from being somewhat tonal with a consistent setting, then it’s not really all that impressive in the end. With “SUBURBICON”, George Clooney’s latest attempt at direction, seems to leave a lot to be desired with trying to be a little too confident in itself when it came to presenting a powerful story. As is, I still don’t really know if this was supposed to be a story of racial history, a murder mystery, or somewhere in there was supposed to be a dark comedy. I found myself completely lost at times, when I don’t think we the audience, were supposed to be.

The quick run through as best I could understand it is 1950’s/60’s suburbia (you can catch that in the courtesy of the name) the first African-American family, The Mayers (Leith M Burke, Karimah Westbrook & Tony Espinosa) move in the all-white suburban town of “Suburbicon’. Then the neighbors from the back The Gardner’s, (Matt Damon, Julianne Moore & Noah Jupe) are tested when a group of men invade his home, killing his wife and leaving only his son and sister-in-law alive (also Julianne Moore). Falling for his wife’s sister and becoming a complete psychotic and uncontrollable man, this film quickly spirals out of control into a farce of random occurrences. Throughout the first act of this film, it seems like it’s going to be a satire that won’t hold anything back in terms of wackiness, but that’s very quickly thrown out the window, compensating with many subplots of murder and conspiracy. I found myself taken out of the film when the tone would shift this often, making for a very off-putting viewing experience.

Throughout the majority of this film, you’re asked to accept the horrible things that the main characters are doing, or just connect with Gardner’s young boy on an emotional level, but he’s not quite present enough in my opinion. Not until the third act do you really find yourself caring about some of the characters, which truly at that point, didn’t matter any more. This movie tries far too hard to be clever, funny, and surprising – so hard in fact that it just comes off as forced more often than not. You will find yourself along for a ride of random events and you won’t really know who to root for, let alone what or why it’s even happening or what the correlation is. Honestly there is zero correlation between the African-American family moving in and Matt Damon’s wife getting murdered. In fact, as you watch the movie you will notice that the African-American family actually plays no significant part in the actual plot of the movie as far as you can understand that plot to be. It is as if they are just there for filler and to maybe politicize the movie in some way – I’m truly not sure as it makes no sense. What is the driving point of the ‘dark comedy/murder mystery’ aspect and taking the viewer to watching how horrible this family is being treated. It wasn’t funny then and it’s not funny now – that this still happens. But that’s a whole different movie so again, why is it even here?

I may seem to be ripping this film apart for being uneven, but for all its flaws, there are actually one or two somewhat fun sequences involving an appearance by Claims Insurance Investigator Bud Cooper (Oscar Isaac). There is a lengthy scene when secrets are revealed and characters begin to evolve and Isaac elevated every moment of this portion of the film, but it almost is like they are grasping at straws by this point. You haven’t laughed yet, so it’s hard to really rustle one up by then. Up until that point, there really weren’t any characters to grasp onto, but the environment around them, along with the sets and the score, always helped to make the film feel more authentic than what its screenplay was presenting. This may sound confusing, but that’s due to the fact that this is a very confusing watch, and I’m thinking many will agree with me on that account.

From being written by Joel and Ethan Coen, to being directed by George Clooney, ‘Suburbicon’ just feels like a huge missed opportunity, due to the talent involved. Matt Damon and Julianne Moore both don’t deliver on performances here and feel about as average as you can get.

Overall, ‘Suburbicon’ is a film that will probably leave your mind as quickly as it came as it’s just a very forgettable film.

REVIEW: “HAIL, CAESAR!” (2016) – Universal Pictures

All Hail Caesar!!!
This Coen Brothers satire of old school Hollywood is a perfectly done mix of what our imagination might conjure up of what the Aqua-musicals or dance sequence films from the ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ could be if they were done today.

The film centers around physical production/studio head Eddie Mannix, played by Josh Brolin. Mannix is a fixer at the fictitious Capital Pictures in the 1950’s. This involves him dealing with numerous egos, including their box-office superstar Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) and Aqua~movie starlet, DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johannson). Not long after the film begins, Whitlock is kidnapped and Mannix begins his quest to get him back with some surprising help along the way from young western actor, Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich).

With a top notch billed cast, you do tend to notice that some of the names receiving top billing, are only in it for short pieces of time or literally there for only a ‘blink-and you missed it’ moment – as such is the case with Jonah Hill’s character Joseph Silverman. Besides that odd glitching, all the supporting cast as a whole are just plain good and you don’t get a bad performance from anyone as even the normally so wooden Scarlett Johannson plays her small part well and unannoying.   Aside from the names mentioned, you’ll also see Ralph Fiennes being spot on as director Laurence Laurentz, Tilda Swinton doing hysterical double time as bickering twin gossip columnist sisters, Thora & Thessaly Thacker. Channing Tatum for whom I must say,  I love where he is taking his career with roles like this, truly dazzles with his singing and dancing number that is so beautifully done it makes you not only yearn for those times of past, but want them back if he keeps doing this.

Brolin is fantastic in the lead role and turns what could be a very unlikable character into a very endearing and sympathetic one. The real find among the cast is Ehrenreich. The character of Hobie Doyle is simple enough but Ehrenreich manages to turn him into one of the more amusing and interesting characters you’ll find in this film.

All in all I truly enjoyed the film as a whole and I’m guessing all Coen Bros. fans will thoroughly enjoy it.  However as a second note, my guest didn’t like it as much and he made a good point.  That he didn’t ‘get’ all the innuendos of some of it and said the general public as a whole might not either as it might have that ‘going over their heads’ problem.
For me, I highly recommend this Golden-Age romp through the glory days of Hollywood..

“GRAVITY”

Saw ‘Gravity’ tonight – and an fyi Los Angelenos..Regal Cinemas has $7 Tuesdays..all day/night any showing, 3D-IMAX whatever..no extra charge..it’s downtown at LA LIVE which is unbearably quiet when nothing at Staples or Nokia..but anyways..yeah it was probably 1 of the 1st movies I would say ‘worth it in 3D’ as it was well done and the photography was amazing.. I think I am missing the hype of what a GREAT movie it is though..I mean I thought it was good.. but not great by any means.. to be truthful, there was a moment I almost nodded off. Sandy was fun in it, but this is not an award winning performance like ‘The Blind Side’ was..and although George Clooney’s character threw me off and to be honest, kinda creeped me out. Would I recommend it. eeehhh that’s a tough call but yes, I guess I could say I would though not as highly as some do.
