Last night I had the opportunity to see a movie..a movie that I think might just sweep the Oscars, at least as of now. It was like no other movie I’ve seen in a while & so compelling & such great storytelling & acting, that I was truly moved in every way possible. It is by far the best movie of the year yet. I am talking about ‘Lee Daniel’s – “The Butler”. This story moved me in every way possible – you laughed, you cried, you hid your eyes in horror and you remembered & learned that yes, there were heroes in all of it. You remembered & saw history..most of it sad in the 60’s – which to me was by far the most turbulent decade we’ve had, and the joys of a love story, a story between a father & son & most of all a story of a man who knew many Presidents & knew them on a completely different scale than anyone could. As for the acting, I stopped being a fan of Oprah Winfrey a long long time ago..she was amazing in The Color Purple, but the whole talk show business irked me..I can only say this..Dammit Oprah, why didn’t you keep acting all those years instead of the damn talk show..She was in one word – Fantastic – and I hope she finds more roles like this.. Forrest Whitaker..I don’t think he is capable of a bad performance..and this proves it once again. Lenny Kravitz, Cuba Gooding Jr, John Cusak, Robin Williams all wonderful supporting.. Jane Fonda as Nancy Regan – oh the irony and flawlessness that this was! This movie still has my thoughts reeling this morning & I will see this movie again, because it is simply..The Best Movie of the Year!! Grade: A+ #peggyatthemovies

“Blue Jasmine”
‘Blue Jasmine’ is a full on Woody Allen movie..It’s like you can always tell a Woody Allen movie even if no one told you he wrote & directed it.. He just has a certain style..and I’ve always liked it. Was it his best..nah..I think it’s been awhile since there has been a fantastic Allen movie..but it was really good. It had it’s moments of laughter, sadness, quirky & kind of a message dare I say… Cate Blanchett is stellar as always, but who REALLY shocked me was Andrew Dice Clay of all people in a supporting role.. and did a really good job!!! Grade: B – #peggyatthemovies
“The East”
Anyone that knows me knows how much I love my Indie movies..yet sometimes they can be so low-budget that they just aren’t up to par. So today was different..saw this fantastic indie movie today..’The East’ – easily the best movie I’ve seen all year so far. Fantastic storyline that will open your eyes to so many things & give you such mixed emotions on all of it. What is right/wrong? Suspenseful & thought provoking for sure.. The acting is top notch by every person in it.. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes their Indie features. Grade – B+ #peggyatthemovies
It’s a 3fer for this posting! “The Iceman” “Mud” & “Fast & Furious 6”
Ok..so while everyone is out seeing the big budget movies, I tend to go Indie when I know they are worth it..and I’ve seen 2 really good ones, and yes even 1 big budget in the past 2 weeks. First, ‘The Iceman’ – wow..I had read some on this story, but never knew the true deal.. Mind boggling what this story is & how his family just didn’t have a clue for years.. Michael Shannon is really going to be my go-to actor this year I just know it. His performance as the hit-man The Iceman is mind boggling.. Grade B+
2nd movie: ‘Mud’ and yes, Michael Shannon has a supporting in this..just can’t get enough of this guy..but Matthew McConaughey is so good and shows that hey..maybe he can really act somewhat as we once thought he could..but the 2 performance by the kids in this movie is what brings it. I will be following both of them Tye Sheriden & Jacob Loftland in his 1st role ever.. to see what they do as they grow up as they should be getting some awards for this movie. It’s such a heart-tugging really messed up love story, but it’s like we’ve all seen it, but not like this.. funny thing is the only person I didn’t like in the movie was Reese Witherspoon..hmm.. Grade B+
Lastly..oh yes.. I saw Fast & Furious 6.. which honestly..was better than 5, but that was so bad not sure how much that says..ha! But entertaining..oh yes..I mean who doesn’t want to see Vin Diesel jump from a car going 100+ mph, catch Michelle Rodriguez in mid-air mind you on like the M5 in London..and land on a car on the opposite side at an impact of again, 100+mph and not even break a fingernail.. either of them..it was hysterical..but I will say this.. showing me Jason Stathom at then end & knowing that sexy as end all be all man will be in FF7.. oh yes.. count ME IN!!! #RIDEORDIE Grade C+ but oh so entertaining.. #peggyatthemovies
Doing a few 3-fer’s here – “Disconnect” “Iron Man 3” “The Great Gatsby”
So I’ve seen a few movies in the last few weeks.. 1st one – ‘Disconnect’ – It was a decent story which I thought could have been taken farther in showing what the advent of internet/social networking etc. has brought on us The performances, especially by the younger half of the cast, were fantastic. They really made the movie..Grade B+ – the plus definitely being the performances.
Next – ‘Iron Man 3’ For the most part I love Marvel movies, tho X-Men is my fav. they are always entertaining..again.. for the most part..why why why I ask do you case Gwenny in this.. Along w/Hathaway & Stewart they make the triplicate of worst actresses out there..and she proves that here once again.. I wanted to punch her as bad as Guy Pierce did.. trust me.. and if there is a Iron Man 4 seems as tho she will be back..might skip it because of that.. Grade: B (taken down a notch because of G.P)
Lastly – ‘The Great Gatsby’ – took my mom for mother’s day.. and just as the 1st rendition years ago, the critics are panning it..Not sure why.. Tho I am admittedly partial to the old school rendition, Robert Redford’s take of this movie.. the visuals in this new version are hard not to respect!! they are STUNNING! DiCaprio is in his element here and shows why he is truly one of the great actors of our time..he has definitely grown up and into his own with these great performances of these past years since Titanic. I love this story.. I always have.. human flaw stories do it to me every time. It’s long and has it’s slow moments..but I still liked it tons.. Grade B+ #peggyatthemovies
Roger Ebert
Devastated to hear of Roger Ebert’s passing. Only a few days ago I heard his cancer had come back and he was going to mount another battle to fight it. I have watched him review movies since the days of Siskel & Ebert, (the wonderful Gene Siskel who passed in the 90’s) then Ebert & Roeper and have followed his witty-ness on twitter for 5years & felt priveleged to have a few banters back n forth over the years.. I feel like I lost a movie family member. I never saw a movie without reading what he said about it.. My heartfelt thoughts are with his wife & family..
Oscar Picks for 2012 movies
It’s the final day..the big one..Best Picture: Well I think I’ve made it no secret what I think the best pic is..With that..a quick rundown of the ‘others’ *note – did not see ‘Life of Pie’ had no desire to see a movie done almost entirely on green screen..its a cable movie to me. sorry..’Lincoln’ decent enough movie, the supporting cast was great but oh so slow & plodding at times, but was fun to see that the Republican party was once the party of change..boy have they done an about face.. ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ – a different type of look on a love story..tho predictable. still a decent movie; ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ it wasn’t The Hurt Locker for me, but it was a good movie; ‘Les Miserables’ was pretty much miserable for me..this and ‘Amour’ were just plain bad bad bad movies & not even sure who the hell nominated them. seriously..awful. I walked out of one & would have walked out the other but thankfully it ended. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” yeah..um..def not a best picture kind of movie..not sure I get the nomination here as it was odd and not in a good way. I mean I got the meaning behind the story..but it just didn’t do it for me. Now ‘Django Unchained’ WAS a fantastic movie..simply FANTASTIC..I did not think i would like it this much..if I have a 2nd choice this is it.. FIRST CHOICE – yep.. you guessed it.. ‘Argo’..but let me tell you why..you knew what was going to happen, yet it kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time and when it didn’t you were laughing..it was the right mix of everything a really great movie should be!! plus I want Ben Affleck to get up on stage when he wins and tell the Academy ARGO-fuckyourself for not nominating me as director!!! ha! #Peggyatthemovies
Oscars – Best Actor pick
Day 5: Getting down to the nitty gritty – Best Actor. Did not see Joaquin Phoenix so can’t judge. And while some of the movies these actors were in were slow & plodding at times, they did REALLY good jobs. Daniel Day Lewis portrayed Lincoln in such a believable manner, Denzel – just amazing in this role, Hugh Jackman, even tho I couldn’t bear the movie, did an ok job, and Bradley Cooper..who would have thought the Hangover guy could actually act??!! And that my friends, is exactly why I am picking him..I like surprises, I like the fact that he went so far out of what is the norm for him. We all know Daniel & Denzel etc..can act.. so let’s break out of the box for once & give it to the guy who we would have never thought in this lifetime would even be nominated.. plus maybe he will bring a tiger onstage for his accpetance speech!! 😀 #Peggyatthemovies
Oscars – Best Director 2012
Day 3: Best Director – Let’s just start this off with the fact that Ben Affleck was NOT nominated for this Oscar and that my friends is a travesty!!! Same with Quentin!! But..moving on. The only one I can’t judge here is Ang Lee – who I somewhat like as a director but just had no desire to see ‘Life of Pi’ sorry..to those that love it..but its just a ‘wait till its on cable’ movie for me. ‘Amour’ was a terrible, horribly depressing movie..having seen plenty of foreign films I know how different they can be..but a 3 min scene of a lady vacuuming which had nothing to do with the movie..& there were many scenes like this..so sorry Michael Haneke, no bueno; Steven Speilberg, ‘Lincoln’, while beautifully filmed, could have easily been 45min shorter. Benh Zeitlin, ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’, while an ok movie – also had its ‘huh’ factor for me. So the last one left is David O. Russell – and I would then by fault give the award to him, as ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ was a B+ type of movie.. Do I think it should go to Ben Affleck or Quentin Tarantino – yes by all means YES! but sadly they don’t allow write-in’s.. *sigh* #Peggyatthemovies
Oscars – Best Supporting Actor 2012
Day 2 – Best Supporting Actor: This is a great category..sadly much better than the women’s side. I will preface this by saying I think John Goodman was ROBBED for not getting a nod for his role in ‘Flight’ – but moving on, Robert Di Niro, just fantastic..I mean he’s getting older..but damn he can still give it to a role. Tommy Lee Jones, good job, but I thought Lee Pace was a better supporting in Lincoln. Before I saw Django – from the trailer I thought..meh ..Christof Waltz did this role already in Basterds..I was wrong..he is so good in this fantastic movie!! Sadly, did not see Phillip Seymour Hoffmans perf. but I DID see Alan Arkins and this is my pick for BSA Oscar!!
