The Razzie Nominations

The Razzie Nominations

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2014/01/15/grown-ups-2-heads-up-full-list-of-razzie-nominees/

Ahhh the Razzies!  Done every year right before the Oscars noms are announced at the ungodly hour of 5:30am.  Usually they get it spot on…and this year is no exception. Luckily enough, I usually don’t see too many of them because I’m actually smart enough to not waste good money on these movies..But we all make mistakes..mine was Johnny Depp (whom I love) and ‘The Lone Ranger’ = one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.  Anything Tyler Perry or Adam Sandler is a given that it’s going to be bad and yeah most of Halle Berry’s stuff also. No one wonders why ‘After Earth’ is on here..I mean if even the trailer for the movie is bad, you know the movie will be 492045022 times worse.  There isn’t anything here that completely doesn’t deserve to be here. With that being said, let’s look to happier moments of the Oscar noms tomorrow! 😀

Cheers!

Lot’s of TV shows back this week PLUS new ones!

Things are definitely kicking into gear for the 2014 TV season.. Here is everything that is on this week and what I will be watching is bolded!!!  I usually give new series 2 eps. to hook me as I know usually the 1st eps has to give me the rundown of what it’s going to be about & the characters etc..and I don’t have time to watch everything and gotta stick with only good stuff nowadays!! or my version of what’s good!! ha!

HAPPY GOLDEN GLOBES DAY!!

Image

Before I post my picks..let me preface this by saying the Golden Globes is by far my favourite awards show and the only one I would truly give my left arm to attend as not only is it one big party and looks so fun, but it’s both Movies AND TV ~ I mean how can you go wrong!! My picks here are completely my own and I usually don’t go with who’s ‘supposed’ to win or the favourite, but with what I actually liked over the year. which I will say is why my winners are never picked so much..but it’s okay..I stay true to what I liked and sometimes get a good surprise!! I was not a fan of ‘Gravity’ nor so much ’12 Years a Slave’ though I liked it a lot more than ‘Gravity’ as I didn’t get the hype. I am still hoping ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ upsets all… I also like to pick some new favourites as I would LOVE to see Tatiana Maslany win as Best Actress because for me, if you are not watching ‘Orphan Black’ you are missing something really really good. Also, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is hysterical and the other comedy’s are just the same old, same old.  In a few categories, such as Best Supporting Actor I picked 2 as if Jared Leto doesn’t win, I would be completely happy with Daniel Bruhl. Also, didn’t pick Best Foreign Picture as I only saw 1 which doesn’t qualify as an opinion nor did I vote in the music categories. So with that said, here we go….

Let me start off by saying I love ‘Mary Poppins’  I never had read the books as a child that I can remember..I was a Nancy Drew girl, but the movie was wonderful. I also love Disneyland..yep the one & only true original DISNEYLAND in Anaheim. It was a wonderful place to go to as a child though I didn’t get to go a lot of times, they were all memorable. This movie really brought back all those memories in a way that I never imagined because as a child you just sometimes think all these things are real, I did at least, and they just magically happen! You don’t think that someone wrote them, and spent 20yrs trying to make it a movie, nor 2 random guys wrote the songs etc etc.. One day it’s just there and it’s wonderful. This story tells you so much more which is why I probably wouldn’t take kids to it. There is no swearing or killing, nothing ‘R’ rated, but hey, just don’t spoil the fantasy that most kids have like I did. I found this to be a rather heart-wrenching tale of what & who ‘Mary Poppins’ really is ..or was..and it made me a bit sad that her life had to be so hard when all these years, you just thought she had a spoonful of sugar and everything was grand. Tom Hanks is fun as Walt Disney himself (will he be cryogenically frozen also – hmmmm 🙂  but I am not so sure Walt himself was really that jovial. I always heard stories that he was kinda a grumpy guy.. I love Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers and from the original recordings you can hear that yes, she was that bitchy of a Brit over her story! ha! Colin Farrell does a good turn here also as ‘Mary’s real life father’ and really the man who prompted the story be written at all.  I liked this movie and while I don’t think it will win any major awards, it’s a decent nomination turn.  Grade: B+  #peggyatthemovies

At this movie started off, I sat thinking ‘Uh oh – here we go, another movie about crotchety old people’ and it was just that at the beginning. But it turned into a lot more.  I should say upfront though that one of my biggest fears – besides spiders & needles – is getting old. It’s scares the bejesus out of me as each year passes and how different things become, and not for the better. So yes, this movie frightened me in that way as ‘damn, I just don’t want this but yet it’s inevitable. It rolls with what seems a pretty authentic feel for what small town living must be like..something I have never experienced, but in a weird way, always wanted to just try it for a bit. (yes, I know how well it would work out as in not at all Ha!) But as it goes on and you see the very funny family interactions. As much as they bicker and spool each other with nasty comments, some of it is just plain funny. Dark humour to say the least, but you still laugh. And what you thought was going to be a another silly story of an old person, finely acted by Bruce Dern, turns into a rather sweet, sentimental journey of a father and son (Will Forte is surprisingly good here in a turn for drama).  June Squibb as Dern’s character, Woody Grant’s wife, Kate, is really the show stealer here though. Her and the wonderful Stacy Keach (Ed Pegram) I think she might get a best supporting nod for this though probably not a win.  Do I think this movie is good enough for a Best Oscar nod, nah..I can see why some do though. It’s a good watch for a family viewing – not kids – especially if you have older parents such as I do, take them to this movie, show them some love as this movie clearly shows..getting older is not fun, but you can still give it a day or two to live life.  #peggyatthemovies

TV.. Some New & some Old shows coming back this week..

Starting last night we got Season 4 of ‘Downton Abbey’ ~  why is it we all (especially Americans) love this show so much??..I think it’s because it gives us an insight to something we really know nothing about and they make us like all the characters pretty much..even the ones we love to hate..with a good balance of drama, love & some really great one-liners and acting from the wonderful Maggie Smith.  She is always impeccable!!   We also however got ‘The Good Wife’ coming back in what is by far it’s BEST season ever.. I mean the whole show is just pure GOLD!!!  Alicia & Will.. hell, you know this is all foreplay leading up to what will surely be an epic rekindle of romance & major sex scene upcoming between them..I mean COME ON!!  you know it is! 😀

Tonight, Monday, ‘Hostages’ is ending Season 1.. helllooooo…helloooooo.. yes I said it’s the Season Finale of ‘Hostages’.. yep.. that’s what I thought.. no one cares.. Sad too because I love Toni Collette, Tate Donovan & Dylan McDermitt, but the show just never really got to any build up or intensity and wowed absolutely no one. Really was hoping the best for this show..but alas..we probably won’t see it come back.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, is hopeful for me.. ‘Brooklyn Nine Nine’ is back and if you haven’t watched this show, you are missing probably one of the funniest shows on TV.. yeah..I know..I didn’t think it would be that great either..but oh how good it is.. If you’re looking for laughs..this is the show.. Skip ‘New Girl’ as it’s really gone downhill this year..used to be quirky & funny..now…not so much. Also, and please please please cross your fingers for this one, SAWYER IS BACK!! yes.. yes.. you heard me..ok..so his name is Josh Holloway..but dammit we’ve been ‘Lost’ (pun intended:) without Sawyer…er..um..Josh!  I so hope his new show ‘Intelligence’ at 9pm is good.. I am really praying to the TV gods for this one..  And lastly, ‘JUSTIFIED’ is back.. if you’ve never watched this show on FX10pm, yeah..you’ve been missing out on some really good shit..I love Raylon (Timothy Olyphant) & Boyd (Walton Goggins) as they are 2 of my favourite characters on TV!  It’s just a damn good show and it should be watched by all.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that ‘Killer Women’ a new show from Sofia Vergara also debuts tomorrow..but yeah..I will be foregoing it in favour of ‘Justified’ sorry..

Wednesday – a lot of your usual shows are back, ‘The Middle’ (which I like) and ‘Modern Family’ etc etc..So is ‘Law & Order SVU’ which I will dutifully DVR because really what is TV without some L & O in it somehow, some way!! ‘Revolution’ is also back and shout out to Billy Burke.. I like this show..it’s not the best show or anything..but it’s very watchable. So yeah..I’m in to see it come back.

Thursday – Again shows are slowly coming back and I think the only new show is ‘The Assets’ which isn’t bad..it’s very 1980’s spy oriented..like a ‘Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy’ kinda TV show.. I give most things 2 eps. unless they are horribly bad during the 1st one.. so this will get a chance from me..

Friday, usually not much happening..but yeah..Dracula..who doesn’t want to watch an hour of Jonathan Rhys Meyers doing anything,,ha!  😀

So.. that’s it for now..As more mid-season replacements come up – they will be talked about..

Cheers until then..

The Wolf of Wall Street

Here’s the deal about this movie.. as you’re watching it you know Jordan Belfort is an absolute scumbag from moment one.  But you get sucked into the story really quick..and that is because of DiCaprio’s performance – which is simply fantastic! Matthew McConaughey is seriously my ‘go-to’ guy this year as his smart, but small supporting role at the beginning is not only pivotal, it’s just really damn good! Hey we’ve seen people get nominated and win, for much less time onscreen.  But the star of this movies is clearly the word ‘EXCESS’  I mean I had my party days, they might have even lasted a few years to long, and thought I could hold up with the best of them as we did pretty damn good job of it..but these people made me look like a tee-toller!!  The supporting cast is great – but again it’s all about DiCaprio, and one day they have to give him more than just a nomination but the actual Oscar itself. I’ve watched him come up from ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ – which I went to see for Johnny Depp and walked out going ‘who is that other kid’ to ‘Basketball Diaries’.. Hell I even saw ‘The Quick & the Dead’ – well for Russell Crowe at the time..ha! Even when ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’ was released same time as ‘Titanic’ and it was so overlooked.. He’s had to many great performances & the list can go on & on..but hey, you know what they are too! So beyond that, and the fact that this guy, Belfort, was a scumbag who got away with way to much & of course they don’t show the hurt he caused people, it’s still a truly good movie that is award-worthy.  Oh, that and Jordan Belfort is shopping a reality TV show..*sigh*  A & E or Bravo…here is your new target audience..  But definitely see the movie.. Grade: A   #peggyatthemovies

Grudge Match

Had my nephews for a day so I thought this movie would be appropriate to take them to, and it was..and not gonna lie, I kinda wanted to also see it myself. why? Well because between the two of them, Sylvester Stallone aka Rocky and Robert De Niro aka Raging Bull, they have made probably 2 of the best, most notable boxing movies ever done.  My nephews, 11 & 13. & their friend Jayden don’t know that, but I gave them a brief history afterwards.  It’s billed as a comedy and Kevin Hart I guess is supposed to be the funny one, so you would think..but nope, Alan Arkin steals the few good, funny  comedy bits from him with dead pan humour.  Kevin has a few funny lines and as you can see from a bunch of upcoming movies plus appearances – we are getting Kevin Hart saturation in the coming months.. will it be overkill or will he be actually funny.. well let’s wait and see. I like him for the most part. Kim Basinger, who I just found out turned 60 and is beyond STUNNING looking..she just beautiful, is thrown in as the love interest of both Stallone & De Niro’s character from past points..had a son with De Niro’s character – and no I’m not making up these names..ha! (‘The Kid’ McDonnen) when pissing off Stallone’s character (‘Razor’ Sharp) – Jon Berenthal from TWD fame..does a decent supporting job as the son  I mean it’s a fun, quirky movie, like it’s a comedy with a heart story behind it is what I was getting,.neither of them are going to get Oscars or even a mention. But I gotta give huge respect to these to old guys working out etc..and even staging a pretend fight at their age.. They are tougher than a lot of guys I know in their 20’s & 30’s – or heck myself even!! ..so respect from me on that is definitely there. It’s an okay enough of an entertaining movie to take kids to, or parents etc..  Grade: C-     #peggyatthemovies

Present time Grudge Match..
Present time Grudge Match..

‘August: Osage County

Last night I had the good fortune to go to the premiere of August: Osage County and see almost all the stars of the movie Meryl Streep (looks fantastic), Julia Roberts (even though you can see ‘Pretty Woman’ is getting older, you can also tell she’s had no work done & looks great), Margo Martindale, Ewan McGregor, Julianne Nicholson, Dermot Mulroney, and Juliette Nicholson..Good movie, but you’ve seen it before..crazy dysfunctional family drama. you’ve seen Meryl do this role..Dermot Mulrooney & Juliette Lewis have played these same characters too many times now to count.. But Julia Roberts & Julianne Nicholson were fantastic.. Both held their own against a always good Meryl Streep. Benedict Cumberbatch who I hoped would be great, barely came across. And I’m glad Margo is getting the roles she deserves after all this time.. It’s depressing as hell, but hey it might make you realize that you thought your family was crazy but maybe they aren’t so bad after all. Grade: C+ (for above average performances by most) #peggyatthemovies

“American Hustle”

There are some movies that I am so dying to see that I MUST see them on the day of release 1st thing.. Only a few, but ‘American Hustle’ is one of those movies.. and WOW..am I glad I did. Not only was it a full showing for the 1st screening of the day, but the movie is probably the best dark comedy I’ve seen since ..well..’War of the Roses’ or something close to that. The most notable performances were by far Amy Adams ~ she is pure GOLD, Christian Bale & Bradley Cooper, but they are all good.. And if you only go to see the hairstyles and the fantastic soundtrack, you will be A-ok also!! It’s a fabulously woven plot line that is suspenseful enough to keep the movie rolling along, plus laugh along the way. I LOVED this movie and everything about it.. Deserving of every nomination it gets.. Grade: A #peggyatthemovies
